WienMobil Rad (2026): Prices, App & Stations Explained

Updated

WienMobil Rad is Vienna's public bike-sharing system, operated by nextbike on behalf of Wiener Linien. It replaced Citybike Wien in 2022 and now spans all 23 districts with 3,000+ bikes and 200+ stations. This guide lists June 2026 tariffs, shows how to register in the app, and explains when sharing beats a full-day rental from bike-rental-vienna.

How WienMobil Rad works

Download the WienMobil or nextbike app, add a payment card or wallet, and scan the QR code on the bike or dock screen to unlock. Ride, then return to any official station with a free dock—the trip ends when the bike locks.

Bikes are marked as mechanical or e-bike on the map. You cannot return an e-bike to a mechanical-only station if the electronics reject the pairing—read the dock display before you walk away.

Our live stations map shows bikes and free docks citywide so you avoid empty stations at Praterstern or Schwedenplatz during morning rush.

Standard tariff (June 2026)

Pay-as-you-go without a WienMobil pass: 0.75 € per started 30 minutes on a standard bike, capped at 19 € per 24 hours. Short sightseeing hops between museums often stay under 5 € if you dock within half an hour each time.

The cap protects you from runaway bills on a long day, but three or four long legs can still approach the daily maximum—compare WienMobil Rad vs Bike Rental in Vienna (2026 Comparison) and cheap-bike-hire-vienna when you ride more than ninety minutes total.

Invoices arrive in the app; foreign cards work. Keep the app open until the return confirmation appears—lost signal at underground docks is rare but annoying.

Mix tariff with WienMobil pass or KlimaTicket

Holders of a valid WienMobil annual pass or KlimaTicket pay 0.35 € per 30 minutes on standard bikes, capped at 9.50 € per 24 hours. That is roughly half the casual rate and is the best sharing deal for residents and long-stay visitors who already bought transit products.

You must link the pass in the app before the ride starts; retroactive discounts do not apply. Tourists without Austrian passes stay on the standard tariff unless they purchase eligible WL products.

E-bike tariff and battery etiquette

E-bikes bill 3 € per started 30 minutes, capped at 36 € per 24 hours. They suit Kahlenberg approaches and headwind returns on Cycling the Danube Island (Donauinsel): 21 km Car-Free but cost far more than a shop e-bike from e-bike-rental-vienna on a full day.

Battery level shows in the app; avoid taking a bike below twenty percent if you plan a climb. Return with the charge you received where possible—operators may penalise systematic deep discharge.

Helmet not included; lights are built in. Still read Cycling Rules in Vienna: What Visitors Need to Know for night riding obligations.

Annual subscription and frequent riders

The yearly WienMobil Rad subscription costs 59 € (29.50 € for qualifying WL regular customers). The first half hour of each trip is free, then standard minute rates apply—ideal for daily commutes under thirty minutes.

Visitors rarely buy the annual pass unless they stay months; locals pair it with the U-Bahn pass. nextbike Vienna: The Complete Guide explains branding overlap if you already have a nextbike account from another city.

Registration step by step

Install WienMobil or nextbike, verify email, add Visa/Mastercard/Apple Pay/Google Pay, accept terms, and enable location. Optional: link KlimaTicket or WienMobil pass for Mix pricing.

Scan the bike, pull the cable if present, adjust saddle height, test brakes near the station. First ride? Practice return at the same dock before crossing busy Ring crossings.

Account issues (card declined, stuck lock) route through in-app chat; note the four-digit bike ID on the frame when you call support.

Stations, coverage, and the stations map

Stations sit at U-Bahn hubs, the Ring, Donaukanal bridges, and Donauinsel access points. Coverage reached all districts by 2024—suburban stations may have fewer bikes overnight.

Where to Find Bike-Sharing Stations in Vienna lists behaviour at full stations: try the next dock on the map or wait a few minutes for a return. Do not leave a bike unlocked outside the system—you will be charged.

Combine with Danube Canal Bike Path (Donaukanal): A Local Favourite for a car-free first afternoon; the stations map helps you plan a one-way canal ride and U-Bahn back if tired.

When to use sharing vs a rental shop

Sharing wins for 10–25 minute legs between sights, one-way hops, and spontaneous detours. Shops win for child seats, cargo bikes, all-day comfort, and predictable cost—see Bike Rental in Vienna: All Options Compared (2026) and wienmobil-rad-vs-rental.

Break-even: if you pay near the 19 € daily cap two days in a row, a shop city bike near 33–37 € per day may be cheaper with better ergonomics. Our price comparison page models this with June 2026 numbers.
